This Amish Baked Custard Dessert is a creamy and comforting treat made with simple ingredients, perfect for any occasion. Enjoy it warm or chilled, making it a versatile addition to your dessert repertoire.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, for garnish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for garnish)
  • Butter (for greasing the baking dish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, crack the 4 large eggs and beat until well combined and slightly frothy (1-2 minutes).
  2. Add 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt, whisking until the sugar is dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour in 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and gradually add 4 cups of whole milk while whisking continuously until smooth and creamy.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  5. Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish and place it in the preheated oven on the middle rack.
  6. Bake for 45-55 minutes until the edges are set and the center is slightly jiggly but not liquid. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack for 10-15 minutes.
  8. Optionally, sprinkle ground nutmeg and ground cinnamon on top for garnish.
  9. Cut into squares or rectangles and serve warm or chilled, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

Notes
