Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm milk and 2 ¼ teaspoons of active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- In a separate bowl, mix 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ cup granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt.
- Once the yeast mixture is ready, add ½ cup melted unsalted butter and 2 eggs. Gradually incorporate the dry ingredients until a soft dough forms.
- On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, peel and slice 3-4 apples. In a bowl, toss the apples with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, ½ cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (if using). Set aside.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface, approximately 12×18 inches.
- Place the apple mixture down the center of the dough, leaving about 2 inches on each side. Cut slits along the edges of the dough, about 1 inch apart. Fold the slits over the apple filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the kringle on a parchment-lined baking sheet and let it rest for 15 minutes before baking. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
- In a bowl, mix 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust consistency with more milk if necessary.
- Once the kringle is out of the oven and slightly cooled, drizzle the vanilla glaze over the top. Allow it to set for a few minutes before slicing.
