Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of fresh bread (preferably a round sourdough or Italian bread)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4–6 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes for a kick
Instructions
- In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine the softened butter and minced garlic. Ensure the butter is soft enough to mix easily, but not melted.
- Add in the finely chopped parsley, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix until well combined, ensuring the parsley is evenly distributed.
- Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning with more salt or garlic as desired.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the loaf of bread on a cutting board. Using a serrated knife, make deep cuts into the bread, about 1 inch apart, without cutting all the way through the bottom.
- Turn the loaf 90 degrees and make another set of deep cuts, creating a grid pattern.
- Generously spread the garlic butter mixture into the cuts of the bread, ensuring every crevice is filled.
- Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese into the cuts, followed by the grated Parmesan cheese. Drizzle any leftover garlic butter over the top if desired.
- Wrap the entire loaf in aluminum foil, sealing it tightly.
- Place the wrapped loaf on a baking sheet and bake for about 15-20 minutes.
- Carefully remove the foil (watch for steam!) and return the bread to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes to achieve a golden, crispy top and melted cheese.
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes.
- Transfer the loaf to a serving platter.
- Using your hands or a serving fork, pull apart the pieces of bread, enjoying the gooey cheese and garlic butter.
- Serve warm, and have napkins ready for this deliciously messy treat!
Notes
