This creamy caramelized onion dip combines sweet, golden onions with rich cream cheese, making it a perfect appetizer for any gathering. Serve it with crunchy vegetable sticks or chips for a deliciously satisfying snack that everyone will love!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)
  • Vegetable sticks or chips for serving

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the thinly sliced onions to the skillet and stir gently to coat them in the oil and butter mixture.
  3. Sprinkle the salt and sugar over the onions and stir to combine.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and cook the onions slowly, stirring every 10 minutes, for about 30-40 minutes until they are deep golden brown.
  5. Remove the caramelized onions from heat and let them cool slightly.
  6. In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and sour cream.
  7. Blend the cream cheese and sour cream together until smooth and creamy using a hand mixer or whisk.
  8. Add the Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper to the mixture and mix until well combined.
  9. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the cream cheese and sour cream mixture using a spatula.
  10. Taste the dip and adjust seasoning if necessary.
  11. Transfer the dip to a serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or overnight for best flavor).
  12. Before serving, stir the dip and add a splash of milk or cream if it’s too thick.
  13. Garnish with freshly chopped chives and serve with vegetable sticks, chips, or crackers.
  14. Enjoy with friends and family!

Notes

  • For best results, use room temperature cream cheese to ensure a smooth dip.
  • Allowing the dip to chill overnight enhances the flavors.
  • If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
