Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup honey
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, mix cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the egg and water until combined. Pour this over the chicken and toss to coat.
- Gradually add the flour mixture to the chicken, tossing to ensure even coating.
- Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping in a small piece of the batter; it should sizzle.
- Carefully add the coated chicken pieces in batches, frying for 4-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to turn the chicken for even cooking.
- Remove the chicken and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat until all chicken is fried.
- In a medium saucepan, combine soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Stir well.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat until it simmers, cooking for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Remove the sauce from heat and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add the fried chicken and pour the sauce over it. Toss gently to coat.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds over the chicken and toss again if desired.
- Transfer the sesame chicken to a serving platter and garnish with sliced green onions.
- Serve hot with steamed rice or fried rice.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to avoid greasy chicken.
- For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the sauce.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or stovetop to maintain crispiness.
