Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces and place them in a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix cornstarch, all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg and water until combined. Pour this over the chicken and toss to coat.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the chicken, tossing to ensure even coating.
  5. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping in a small piece of the batter; it should sizzle.
  6. Carefully add the coated chicken pieces in batches, frying for 4-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Use a slotted spoon to turn the chicken for even cooking.
  7. Remove the chicken and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat until all chicken is fried.
  8. In a medium saucepan, combine soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Stir well.
  9. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it simmers, cooking for 5-7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  10. Remove the sauce from heat and set aside.
  11. In a large mixing bowl, add the fried chicken and pour the sauce over it. Toss gently to coat.
  12. Sprinkle sesame seeds over the chicken and toss again if desired.
  13. Transfer the sesame chicken to a serving platter and garnish with sliced green onions.
  14. Serve hot with steamed rice or fried rice.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to avoid greasy chicken.
  • For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes to the sauce.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or stovetop to maintain crispiness.
