Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded
- 4 hamburger buns
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the chopped onion and green bell pepper. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and the onion is translucent.
- Add the minced garlic and chopped mushrooms (if using) to the skillet. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the garlic is fragrant and the mushrooms have released their moisture.
- Next, add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it up into smaller pieces as it cooks. Cook until the beef is browned and no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure to drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Once the beef is cooked, stir in the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine all the flavors.
- Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Allow it to cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has reduced slightly and the mixture is thickened.
- While the filling is simmering, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Once the filling has thickened, remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the shredded provolone cheese until it’s melted and well combined with the beef mixture.
- Slice each hamburger bun in half and place them on a baking sheet, cut side up. Lightly toast them in the oven for about 5 minutes if you prefer a crispy texture.
- Spoon a generous amount of the cheesesteak filling onto the bottom half of each bun.
- Top each filled bun with the other half of the bun. Optionally, sprinkle fresh parsley on top for garnish.
- After assembling the Sloppy Joes, place them back in the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes to melt the cheese further and warm the buns through.
- Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t overcook. You want the cheese to be gooey and the buns to be warm and slightly crispy.
- Once done, remove them from the oven and let them cool for a minute or two before serving.
- Serve the Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes with a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad.
- Consider serving with a side of pickles or jalapeños for added flavor.
- These Sloppy Joes are perfect for game day, family gatherings, or a cozy weeknight dinner.
- If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
