Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 10 hot dogs (your choice of beef, turkey, or veggie)
- ½ cup baking soda
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
- Mustard or cheese sauce (for dipping, optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir gently to combine and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add the all-purpose flour and salt to the bowl. Mix until a dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide it into 10 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12-14 inches long.
- Wrap the dough rope around a hot dog, covering it completely. Repeat for all hot dogs.
- In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water to a boil and carefully add the baking soda.
- Reduce heat to a simmer and gently lower each wrapped pretzel dog into the water, boiling for about 30 seconds on each side.
- Remove the pretzel dogs with a slotted spoon and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Brush each pretzel dog with the beaten egg.
- Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the top of each pretzel dog.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce for dipping.
