  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup diced cooked ham
  • cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish.
  • Melt the butter and pour it into the baking dish.
  • Whisk together dry ingredients – flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  • Add the cheese and ham, stirring to combine.
  • Pour in buttermilk and mix until just combined (dough will be sticky).
  • Spread the dough evenly into the butter-filled baking dish.
  • Score the dough into 9 squares using a knife.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm!

Notes

  • No buttermilk? Mix 1½ cups of milk with 1 tbsp of vinegar or lemon juice and let sit for 5 minutes.
  • Want a spicy kick? Add diced jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne.
  • Sharp cheddar works best for a bold, cheesy flavor.
  • Let them rest for 5 minutes before slicing to allow the butter to soak in.
